Itinerary
Overview:
A Multisport adventure perfect for a sampling of Alaska's best with a touch of comfort. Experience the rustic Prince William Sound Lodge for warm beds, showers, a suana and great meals. Then move on to a group cabin in McCarthy where we enjoy the base for daily hikes. A variation of our popular 8 day Multisport camping trip with all of the comforts of home.
Day 1-
Meet at the shop for a pre-tour instruction. Load the gear onto a motor boat for a water taxi ride out to Columbia Glacier. Enjoy paddling in the icebergs and with the fabulous wildlife. We get taken by motorboat to the lodge for the first evening. (Lunch) ( Dinner)
Day 2- Explore the area around Prince William Sound lodge. We usually spend part of the day paddling out to Blight Island and then spend the afternoon hiking through the historic Ellamar trails. More great food and a relaxing atmosphere highlights the day. (Breakfast) (Lunch) (Dinner)
Day 3 -
An early start to the day begins with a hot breakfast before packing the kayaks. We spend the day paddling the coastline between the lodge and Galena Bay. This is a great active day with a goal to cover some miles. The boat will pick us up around 4:30 p.m. for teh ride to Valdez. Spend the evening in Valdez at a local B&B or Hotel. You are on your own for dinner. (Breakfast) (Lunch)
Day 4- Meet at the shop for the van ride through keystone canyon and out over Thompson Pass. The glacier fed river will push us through the canyons and forests for a good day of moderate whitewater. We will get dropped off in Chitna for the flight to the quaint town of McCarthy where we stay at a nearby lodge. Accommodations will either be in a small cabin or in the larger "dorm" cabin. There may be some time to take a stroll around the historic town.
(Breakfast) (Lunch) (Dinner)
Day 5- Today is spent on the ice of the Root Glacier. The group will go for a walk on the glacier in search of azure blue glacier ponds and to explore the many wonders of a constantly changing glacier. The Root Glacier offers hiking for any person in basic hiking shape. We take a can shuttle from the lodge to the historic Kennicott Mine for the hike. Enjoy another evening at the lodge (Breakfast) (Lunch) (Dinner)
Day 6- We have the choice to explore the historic areas of Kennicott Mine or go for a more challenging hike up to Bonanza Mine. Enjoy spectacular view either way. We have all day to enjoy hikes and a lunch away from the lodge. We again use the shuttle to get to and from the lodge. Enjoy an evening sauna! (Breakfast) (Lunch) (Dinner)
Day 7- Enjoy a leisurely morning in McCarthy before the flight back to Chitina. We take the van back over Thompson Pass with a stop at Worthington glacier. Today you will have the opportunity to try ice climbing. We choose an ice wall suitable for beginner climbers and teach basic safety and climbing techniques. This is a great way to try your hand at ice climbing and a great way to finish the week. We end the trip in Valdez around 5:00 p.m. (Breakfast) (Lunch)
We suggest planning to stay the last night in Valdez. The tour includes a three day kayak camping tour, 1 day of rafting with van shuttle, a bush plane flight from Chitna to McCarthy and back to Chitina, 3 days guided day hikes and all meals while on tour except dinner on night 3 in Valdez. 1 nights at a B&B in Valdez, 2 nights at Prince William Sound Lodge, and 3 nights at a lodge in McCarthy. We choose the accommodations based on each group.
