Pangaea Adventures is an Alaska-based adventure travel company specializing in sea kayaking, glacier hiking, whitewater rafting, backpacking, camping, multisport trips, and charter tours throughout south-central Alaska.
We are an upbeat, knowledgeable crowd, offering a unique means of exploring a remote and stunningly beautiful corner of Alaska. From sea kayaking amongst the icebergs of Prince William Sound, to rafting the canyons of the Chugach Mountains, to backcountry hiking into the depths of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, we offer a wholesome array of fun ways to experience the Alaskan wild.
Founded in 1996, Pangaea adventures has grown from a tiny two-guide outfit offering a few camping tours each year to a larger 10-12 guide outfit offering over 30 different tour options, with even more custom trips available. The new company was launched after the need for a quality tour operator offering well organized trips and quaity customer service was recognized. The company holds these same values today.
Pangaea Adventures is proud to offer guided tours where over 60% of its customers come from past customer referrals. Controlling what we can, Pangaea prides itself on customer service, quality itineraries and top of the line equipment. “Traveler’s vacations start far before they show up at our office. We take a personal approach when planning their vacation to make sure the guests get the trip they are both looking for and suited for. We then show them the time of their lives!”
Pangaea Adventures focuses on destinations off the beaten path. The areas of travel are mostly in Prince William Sound and Wrangell St. Elias National Park. Prince William Sound is a large body of water protected from the wind and waves of the Gulf of Alaska, making it a wonderful place to sea kayak and explore by small charter boats. Tours explore the furthest reaches of the Sound and focus on tidewater glaciers and remote bays. Over the years the tours have been refined to follow the most pristine stretches of coastline offering the best campsites and protected waters. The wildlife and scenery are simply spectacular.
Pangaea Adventures offers trips from late May through early September when the weather is best. When guests ask which time is best to travel, the easy answer is any of these months.
Different trips for different interests. Pangaea offers a variety of guided tours to enable travelers of all ages, abilities and interests to join.
Sea Kayak Day Tours have made up the biggest part of our busines since 1996. They are suitable for all ages and abilities. We can even cater to paddlers with disabilities. We offer 4 different trips ranging from 3-10 hours, the shortest being a local wildlife paddle around Valdez and the longest being our most popular Columbia Day Tour. For the glacier tours, we take a motorboat “water taxi” out to the glaciated areas and then paddle for the afternoon until the boat returns to bring us back to Valdez.
Glacier Day Hikes are a nice addition to the activities on our menu of trips. We are the only company in Valdez offering these services to the Worthington Glacier State Park, which offers a dramatic and challenging hike. All trips are fully guided and use of specialized equipment is included in the prices.
Whitewater Rafting Tours down the scenic, glacially-fed Keystone Canyon of the Lowe River became a nice addition to our diverse array of options in 2012. Since then, splashing our way through the big class III rapids, down the dramatic, waterfall-adorned canyon has become one of our most popular trips.
Sea Kayak Camping Tours Valdez is the gateway to Northeastern Prince William Sound, home of the famous Columbia Glacier. Trips from Valdez also explore Shoup Glacier and Meares Glacier with tours that visit a portion of each stretch of coastline in between. We’re located in a lush temperate rainforest (the northern most!), where mountains launch out of the water into the alpine, and there is no finer place on earth to explore and camp.
Multisport Adventure Tours offer travelers the opportunity to explore both the lush coast and rugged interior regions of Alaska. They basically take the best of all that we do and fuse them into one-trip samplers. Our trips are different from other company’s multisport trips in that we focus on the more remote wilderness regions with defined activities, not just itineraries that drive from sight to sight to participate in the activities for a few hours each day. These are true wilderness experiences.
Our Multisport trips consist of a blend of sea kayak camping in Prince William Sound, backpacking in Wrangell-St. Elias National park, and river rafting in the Chugach Mountains. Pangaea Adventures is the only local company currently permitted by the National Forest Service, Alaska State Parks and the National Park Service to offer all of these activities in one trip.
Mothership-Based Adventures are highly personalized and designed to get travelers into the wilderness without losing the comforts of home. Motherships are small charter boats that accommodate 4-6 guests and 3 crew members. Pangaea Adventures offers a selection of sailboats and motorboats to charter as floating B&B’s. Each day is spent exploring Prince William Sound by kayak or hikes. The guests are then treated to comfortable berths, fine cuisine and the chance to take a hot shower. The captain sets anchor each night in a different protected bay.
Prince William Sound Wilderness Lodge is located about 25 miles from Valdez and offers travelers a unique, comfy wilderness lodge experience with easy access to hiking and sea kayaking. The trips are designed to offer an active, multi-day vacation without having to sleep in a tent each night. Trips range from 3-5 days with longer stays available on a custom basis. The lodge sleeps 8 guests in 4 private rooms. Oh, and the cuisine is carefully prepared and absolutely delicious!
Pangaea Adventures is one of the most respected sea kayak companies in all of Alaska and it is apparent when anyone is asked about Pangaea throughout the state. The reputation is based on fun, knowledgeable, safety-concious guides, outstanding customer service, and quality tours.
