From the beginning to booking this trip, Kristina was extremely kind and helpful in making the trip exactly what I wanted and working around my schedule. She was great and punctual at communicating, providing detailed answers, itineraries, and breakdowns for me. I traveled alone so she helped find another person to join on the trip as there is a 2 person minimum. She helped incorporate every activity that I wanted and even managed to lower the price by doing so.
Overview: Kayaking and camping through the Columbia Sound (3 days), returned to to Valdez and stopped for rafting with the day group on the way to our flight-see to Kennicott followed by a hike to camp (day 4), Ice Climbing on the Root Glacier, then backpacking across it to camp at Donoho (day 5). Backpacked through Donoho to the Kennicott Glacier then hiked back to the root glacier to camp at our original location (day 6-7), Kennicott tour then returned to Valdez (day 8).
I was able to experience so much in such a short amount of time. Our guide Stan was nice, patient, knowledgeable, and helpful, especially since I've never done anything like this before. He always made us feel safe and was always prepared. He prepared all of our meals and was really good at it! He's funny and was also great at motivating us and keeping us in good spirits when we were tired.
I did extensive research before the trip making sure that I picked the right company and trip. I compared pricing and packages with other companies and Pangaea Adventures was by far the most accommodating, and had the most affordable trips for the activities they offered. They also provide you with any equipment you don't have and it's all clean and in good shape. All of the staff we ran into was friendly and love what they do.
Warning: This isn't your typical "vacation". Sometimes it was physically exhausting, but the incredible sights that could only be seen by this kind of activity was worth every single sore muscle and bruise. I came out of this trip feeling enlightened, stronger physically and mentally, and full of incredible memories! It was more than I could have every imagined. Thank you Pangaea for an experience of a lifetime! read lessMay A.10/07/2015Great kayak trip~ Loved our trip, our guide was professional and knowledgeable about the area, and experiencing the glacier in this setting was an unforgettable experience. We stopped by the shop the morning before and got the skinny on what to expect the next day. Later that evening my husband started having chest pains and ended up in the hospital. I called Pangaea around midnight and left a message that we would not be keeping our rez for the next morning. After spending the night in the hospital we got a call from a staffer at Pangaea the following morning and she very kindly told me that due to our situation she would not charge us for the missed trip. That's a class act in my book. I did not expect this as the fine print was clear that you would be billed for any cancellations. Thanks Pangaea! read less

Wonderful small boat ride to glacial beach. Intermediate kayaking skills suggested to avoid ice and other kayaks. Wear warm layers good when wet with glacial silt and rain. Bring hot tea/cocoa for lunch break. Hard to pee in gear. Highlights were the booming, crashing, snapping of glacier ice above/around us, drifting along w seals and otters, poking small ice shards, hot shower once home. July 6. 55 and rainy. Despite raingear, all were wet, cold, excited, happy, exhausted. read less

They took care of everyone and did their best to keep us all comfortable on a cold, rainy day. I'm so happy this was the location and the company we kayaked with. I'd highly recommend them to any of my friends visiting the area. The only negative I can think of was the slow pace at times which was frustrating when you want to keep moving to stay warm... paddle four strokes, wait, paddle a couple more, wait... but that's more of a reflection of the other guest's abilities than anything negative on the guides themselves. I've never group kayaked before, so I didn't see that part coming.

Off to a great start with the office staff and then Captain Tim who navigated the waters like a boss and a solid pat on the back to our guide, Seth, who sealed the deal with his down to earth knowledge and savvy guidance as we kayaked to Columbia Glacier. We will never forget this day in Valdez. Thanks to Pangea for making it a day worth journaling. read less

We were going to do a guided trip but on Friday night while we were out at dinner, we got a call to let us know our guide had been injured. We wanted to make sure he/she was okay, but were fine doing a self guided trip on our own. We had a great experience in the morning getting everything set up, and then we were off on our own to explore the harbor and duck flats area! We met a family of sea lions sun bathing on a rock who proceeded to follow us around for a half hour with their heads constantly popping up checking what we were doing. We are planning to do a significantly longer trip next spring! read less

It was our first time doing Kayaking, and 6 of us were all rookies. Before we booked the tour, we had a lot of concerns. The tour went very well it was well organized. Our guide Ben was from Minnesota, who went to Alaska in early May to get some company training. He was in charge of 8 people on 4 kayaks. Ben was very knowledgeable. We liked him very much. We had a memorable experience especially for our kids. read less

Sam (guide) took a self-deprecating comical approach to teaching us about safety and what we should expect on our journey. Along the way on our ride out he and Tim (captain and owner) shared facts about Valdez and the Columbia glacier. We arrived and hopped in our boats and paddled around to get our sea legs. Sam then led us through a couple of spots on our way to lunch. Post-lunch we continued our journey into the ice field. Sam's caring demeanor and extensive outdoor experience (NOLS graduate) ensured that our family had a great time. We could have spent a bit more time in the large ice field, but afterwards we all realized how unsafe that zone is. We would definitely return for another tour! read less

Usually the minimum group size is 4, but they took out a smaller group (3 people total) because it was the first day of the season. Our guide, Seth, was great, and the company's owner, Tim, was our wonderful captain. Both offered lots of good information about the area and were very flexible and accommodating. We had extra guides-in-training along who were helpful to us, too. There was no way of predicting what the ice would be like, and unfortunately it was a little too impacted for our kayaks to make it around the corner to see the glacier, but later Tim motored the boat to get us good views of the glacier face and surrounding mountains. It was a cloudy day but we still got some good views, and the clouds create better colors for the icebergs, anyway. Also saw many otters, some seals, bald eagles, etc. along the way. Tim has outfitted the boat with some additional protections for COVID (plexiglass dividers in the cabin, etc.) Note that it will be hard to maintain 6 feet of distance and the boat ride is long (2+ hours), but everyone wears a mask on the boat! Overall a highly organized and professional outfit, creating a perfect day trip. read less
