Sea Kayak Tour of Duck Flats

An exciting and educational sea kayaking tour over the calm waters of duck flats in our double or triple person sea kayaks. This 3 hour paddle includes on land instruction and guided sea kayaking. From our dock in the small boat harbor, the group will sea kayak into the calm protected waters of Duck Flats. The path of the tour will follow a chain of small Islands recognized for their nesting birds and sun bathing seals. Paddling into the depths of Duck Flats will bring us to the nesting sites of Bald Eagles and ravens. Enjoy the discussions of natural history as well as the history of Valdez. This is a wonderful sea kayak tour for first time paddlers having a short time frame.

 

 

Sea Kayak to Gold Creek State Park

Starting from the small boat harbor we will venture into Prince William Sound on a coastal exploration to Gold Creek State Park. The paddle will treat us to sights of seals, sea lions and sea otters. Enjoy this more remote paddle to a wonderful beach for a picnic lunch. Hike through ancient rain forests to cascading waterfalls. Keep your eyes out for black bears and jumping salmon. The return to Valdez will follow the same route back to the small boat harbor. This tour is an excellent choice for those who have a longer day but do not wish to spend the money for the Shoup Glacier Tour.

Hour by Hour Itinerary

Hour 1: Gear up and on-land instruction.
Hour 2-3: Load into the kayaks and paddle from the harbor to Gold Creek State Park.
Hour 4: Lunch break on the beach and take a hike to view the waterfalls and rainforest.
Hour 5-6: Paddle back along the coast to the small boat harbor and return to the Pangaea office.

Shoup Glacier Kayak

The Shoup Glacier Day tour offers an intimate experience at one of Alaska's beautiful water glaciers. Climb aboard our motor boat for a taxi ride to Shoup Bay where we will begin this scenic journey. Over the course of the day we will paddle past floating ice, past a nesting colony of Black-Legged Kittiwakes, and up to the face of the glacier. Enjoy a short walk on the beach and a lunch spot with a colorful glacier view. (You bring your own lunch) At the end of the paddle we will be picked up by the motorboat for the ride back to Valdez.

Hour 3-4 - Kayak from the boat to the face of the glacier
Hour 5 - A one hour lunch break on the beach by the glacier

Columbia Glacier Kayak Day Tour - The Guides Choice

Offering the best wildlife, the best paddling in icebergs and incredible scenery. Columbia Glacier is Alaska's second largest tidewater glacier. Since the early 1980's, the glacier has been retreating catastrophically off of the terminal Moraine leaving an 8 mile long field of floating ice in front of it. On this kayak day tour, we get dropped off close to the moraine of the glacier to go sea kayaking into the icebergs. We take a lunch break and a short hike on the glaciers' moraine. After the break we continue exploring the coastline by kayak The water taxi will bring us back to Valdez after 5 hours of activity.

 

Here is how the schedule works on this 10 hour trip.

Hour 1 - Gear up and Instruction
Hour 2-3 - Motorboat water taxi ride to Heather Bay
Hour 4-5 - Kayak from the boat along the coastline and to the Moraine of the glacier
Hour 6 - A one hour lunch break on moraine overlooking the ice filed
Hour 7-8 Two more hours of kayaking back out of the ice to the motorboat pick-up
Hour 9-10 The ride back to Valdez

Larger groups may request to use Stan Stephens Cruises Tour boat in advance for use as the water taxi and cruise! We use our own USCG inspected water taxi for all regularly scheduled trips.

 

Don't want to Kayak? We would be happy to book your trip aboard the cruise cruise. Only $160 per person. This is a great way to spend the day with your friends and family who do want to kayak. Minimum of 3 cruisers on a trip otherwise cruisers may choose a Stan Stephens Cruise.
