Backpack Valdez and the historic Valdez Glacier -
Small groups and private trips!
Spend 4 days exploring the Chugach mountains surrounding Prince William Sound. Hike from the town of Valdez into the mountains and onto the Valdez Glacier.
Day 1- Meet in Valdez. We suggest getting to Valdez the day before departure. We spend an hour or so reviewing gear and packing the backpacks. We rive from our shop about 5 miles out to the foot of the Valdez Glacier. We start the journey along side the glacier before venturing onto the ice. The Valdez Glacier starts with glacier moraine and then a long field of flat "highway" ice. The guide will lead the group through the first undulating ice walls to access the second shelf. We will set camp along the glaciers edge.
(Lunch, Dinner)
Day 2 - Heading higher up the Valdez Glacier, we will have the opportunity to explore more ice before making a right turn up one of the adjacent valleys. We will leave the ice and head into the hills for some alpine tundra hiking. A motivated crew can access the towering ridge lines above. There are also some historic mines in the area.
(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 3 - We will stay above the glacier and above tree line for easy hiking and more spectacular views. Some groups may prefer to keep the same camp and head out on a day hike rather than carry their packs.
(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 4- An early start allows us plenty of time to venture back onto the Valdez glacier for the trek back to town. The route back is fairly similar but the views are much different. It will feel like a whole new world than the trek up the glacier 3 days prior. We will return to Valdez be mid-afternoon.
